Description

Interesting and informative, "A Child's History of England" takes readers on a fascinating journey, from Ancient England and the Romans to the reign of Queen Victoria.

Full of gallant heroes and brutal villains, high adventure and terrible tragedy, it will appeal to anyone who enjoys a good story.

A Child's History of England is a very interesting and informative history book written by Charles Dickens. It first appeared in serial form in Household Words, running from January 25, 1851 to December 10, 1853.

It was first published in three volume book form in 1852, 1853, and 1854.

Dickens dedicated the book to "My own dear children, whom I hope it may help, bye and bye, to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject".

The history covered the period between 50 BC and 1689, ending with a chapter summarizing events from then until the ascension of Queen Victoria.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870), also known as "Boz", was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Considered one of the English language's greatest writers, he was acclaimed for his rich storytelling and memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime.

The popularity of his novels and short stories has meant that not one has ever gone out of print. Dickens wrote serialized novels, the usual format for fiction at the time, and each new part of his stories was eagerly anticipated by the reading public.

This book is a delightful history of England. And it is a book for all ages.

"In 'A Child's History' we see Dickens near the height of his powers: combining a mastery of plain language, sharp if sometimes heavy irony, and the keenest eye for evocative detail." - David Starkey
